The Studio 2001 – Los Angeles

by on Jan.01, 2001, under Studio 2001

The Studio is a “hands-on” experience for attendees who want to collaborate with advanced digital systems and each other to generate 2D and 3D creations. It is the only SIGGRAPH 2001 program where the content is created at the conference by attendees.

Artists, scientists, and engineers can walk in, create and realize their ideas on paper.

3D
In the 3D area of the Studio, attendees are invited to work with state-of-the-art 3D data capture systems, modeling packages, and rapid prototyping equipment. In this creative environment, you can generate 3D digital objects either by modeling in the latest version of various full-featured software packages or by using 3D data capture devices to scan actual objects (bring an object, or yourself, or sculpt an object out of clay; we’ll even provide the clay). Then your computer models can be “manufactured” three dimensionally (translated into physical reality) with a bank of rapid-prototyping machines, printed two dimensionally using various large and small format printing processes, or animated.

If you are a first-time user, the Studio’s top-flight student volunteers are available to help you through the process, and a whole series of 3D tutorials is planned throughout the week. If you are a “jaded professional,” you can do some intense comparison and tech-testing or take this opportunity to try doing things differently or more experimentally than you might in a normal work environment. This is a studio, after all. Dive in. Spend the day, or the week, investigating the latest in 3D data capture, modeling, and rapid prototyping.

Animation
Welcome to the Animation section of The Studio, where animated ideas become reality. SIGGRAPH 2001 attendees of all skill levels are invited to sign up to use the latest off-the-shelf, commercial animation software to develop, create, or refine 2D and 3D ideas, concepts, and data into living, breathing animation. The general interface, workflow, and creation tools are covered in hands-on sessions in The Studio and in interactive tutorial presentations in The Studio Tutorial Theater throughout the week.

Interact with the experienced Studio staff to create animation of any style, using any available techniques to achieve them. If you are new to animation in the computer realm, our staff will assist with introduction to the concepts of modeling, texturing, lighting, and application of the basic principles of animation. Seasoned animators, technical directors, and other computer graphics professionals are also invited to participate in this unique, collaborative environment.

Each participant can go through the steps of generating key frame and procedural animation to bring their creatures, characters, props, and other scene elements to life. Scene optimization and rendering techniques are also discussed, to ensure efficient rendering for output to CD-ROM or flipbook.

2D
The 2D section of The Studio is designed to introduce participants to the world of 2D output. It includes an array of some 24 Macintosh computers that are color-calibrated and color-matched to a bank of large-format printers from a variety of top manufacturers. Color management training is provided by professional master printers.

In the 2D section, you can work with new printing systems such as, Piezography BW, or produce a “3D” image using lenticular technology. In the Creativity Center, you can combine digital output with traditional art techniques.

Creativity Center
In this hands-on area, attendees work with a variety of traditional media in combination with digital imaging attendees to sculpt 3D models, paint and sketch, create digital transfer prints, and experiment with incorporating traditional and digital media into unique artworks. Attendees from all areas of The Studio are encouraged to imagine, create, and collaborate in this vibrant environment.
